Delivery Bags
Delivery bags are the outer carrying layer of a takeaway order, so the right choice depends on how the food containers load, the weight of the complete order and whether customers need handles. Vivo Packaging’s range of paper bags includes a #16 kraft SOS bag measuring H390 x W240 + G120mm and a medium brown paper delivery bag measuring 300 x 300 x 175mm with twisted paper handles. Both takeaway bags are supplied in cartons of 250 units.
Choose the Paper Bag Style Before Comparing Capacity
The two kraft paper bags organise an order differently. The SOS bag has an open top and block bottom, allowing it to stand upright while staff load containers from above. The medium delivery bag has a wider footprint and handles, making it easier to carry multiple containers or multiple items and hand the completed order directly to a customer or delivery driver.
#16 Kraft Paper SOS Bag
The #16 self-opening square bag measures 390mm high and 240mm wide with a 120mm gusset. Its flat block bottom can suit vertically stacked or upright takeaway packs, baked goods, sandwiches, groceries, snacks and other products that fit within the base. Because it has no handles, the customer normally carries it by supporting or gripping the bag body.
Medium Brown Paper Twist-Handle Bag
The medium delivery bag measures 300 x 300 x 175mm and uses 100gsm brown paper with twisted paper handles. Its broader base may suit multiple containers, boxed food, drinks or combined restaurant orders that need more horizontal loading space. The handles improve carrying convenience, but the complete order still needs to remain within a practical weight for the bag.
Test the selected bag with the exact dimensions of your Clamshells or other meal containers rather than estimating capacity from the bag dimensions alone.
Build Multiple-Item Orders from the Bottom Up
A stable takeaway delivery order begins with the widest and heaviest container on the bottom. Lighter items can be placed above it where they will not crush food, deform lids or create an unstable stack. Multiple containers should sit flat against the bag base rather than leaning against the side walls.
- Place the heaviest flat-bottomed container at the base.
- Keep cold drinks away from paper that may be affected by condensation.
- Avoid stacking heavy items directly on burgers, pastries or delicate food.
- Keep sharp carton corners and cutlery away from the bag walls.
- Leave enough room at the top to lift or close the order without squeezing it.
- Check that the handles remain balanced when the medium bag is lifted.
Orders containing open or lightly closed Chips Boxes should remain upright so hot food, steam and loose pieces do not shift through the bag.
Paper Takeaway Bags Do Not Seal the Food
Paper takeaway bags are designed to carry food that has already been packed in suitable containers. They are not leakproof food packaging, insulated thermal bags or substitutes for secure lids. Sauces, soups and wet meals should be closed correctly before they are placed inside the bag.
Use suitable Disposable Sauce Cups & Plates for separate condiments and test each lid before relying on the outer bag to contain the order.
Heat, Steam and Condensation Can Affect Paper Bags
Hot takeaway food releases steam after packing, while chilled drinks can form condensation. Either condition may expose brown paper bags to moisture. Food delivery services should pack hot food in suitable containers, keep wet surfaces away from the paper and test the complete order over the expected pickup or delivery time.
Do not describe either paper bag as insulated, waterproof, greaseproof or as a direct replacement for a plastic bag unless the individual product specification supports that claim. These bags should remain the outer transport packaging rather than direct protection for unpackaged food.
Test the Complete Order, Not an Empty Bag
- Pack the same containers, drinks, cutlery and napkins used in a normal order.
- Confirm that the largest container sits flat on the bag base.
- Lift the bag using the intended carrying method and check weight distribution.
- Walk the distance expected between the counter, vehicle and customer.
- Set the order down and inspect the base, gussets, sides and handles.
- Repeat the test after the normal waiting or delivery period.
- Adjust the bag size, item layout or order split where the pack becomes unstable.
Place Napkins & Hand Towels near the top or side of the order, where they remain dry and do not interfere with container lids.
When Multiple Containers Should Use Two Bags
A larger paper shopping bag is not always the safer option. Splitting a heavy or mixed-temperature order may improve balance, protect delicate food and reduce pressure on the paper and handles. Separate bags may also be useful when drinks, hot meals, baked goods and desserts have very different shapes or temperatures.
- Split the order when the base is too narrow for containers to sit flat.
- Separate heavy drinks from lightweight meal boxes.
- Keep chilled products away from hot food where condensation is likely.
- Use two balanced bags instead of overloading one handle bag.
- Label split orders clearly so every bag reaches the correct customer.
Recyclable and Compostable Paper Bag Claims
The #16 SOS product is identified as a recyclable kraft paper bag, while the medium delivery bag is made from brown paper with paper handles. Current product information also describes the medium bag as recyclable and compostable. This does not mean the products are made from recycled paper, and these claims should remain attached to the individual item and local collection requirements.
Clean, dry paper is more likely to be accepted than a bag contaminated by oil, sauce or food residue. Reuse may be possible where a bag remains clean, dry and structurally sound, but these products should not be promoted broadly as reusable bags or unlimited-use shopping bags.
Plan Bulk Carton Stock Around Order Type
Both products contain 250 bags per carton, but equal carton quantities do not mean equal usage. The SOS format may be used for smaller takeaway orders, baked goods or groceries, while the handled brown paper bag may be reserved for wider, heavier or multi-container deliveries. Review unit price, storage space and actual usage together when planning bulk stock.
- Track each bag by exact product name or SKU.
- Record how many daily orders use no-handle and handled bags.
- Allow dry storage space that keeps cartons off wet floors.
- Store open bundles where paper remains protected from splashes and grease.
- Review catering, retail and weekend demand separately from regular trade.
