Custom Ice Cream Boxes

Ice cream is the largest frozen dessert category in the Australian market, and one of the most visually competitive retail environments in food retail. A supermarket freezer aisle dedicated to ice cream contains dozens of brands, hundreds of SKUs, and a visual density that makes differentiation genuinely difficult. The packaging needs to work hard – communicating brand identity, flavour, and product quality quickly and clearly in an environment where the consumer is making decisions in seconds.

The physical requirements are real as well. Ice cream is stored at minus 18 degrees Celsius – lower than gelato, lower than most frozen meals – and the packaging needs to maintain structural integrity and print quality at that temperature through weeks or months of retail storage. The freeze-thaw cycles of an open retail freezer, the condensation that forms when the cabinet door is opened, and the physical handling of retail and distribution all test the packaging in ways that ambient food packaging doesn’t face.

Our custom ice cream packaging boxes are manufactured using food safe materials to suit the specific product format, retail environment, and brand positioning of your ice cream and sorbet products. We’ve been supplying ice cream packaging to Australian food businesses since 2017.

Ice Cream Box Styles We Offer

We manufacture custom ice cream boxes across a range of styles to suit different products and markets. All styles are available in custom sizes, materials, and finishes.

    Ice Cream Tub Boxes

The primary retail format for ice cream sold in take-home quantities – a secondary box around a plastic or paper tub that provides retail shelf structure, brand logo communication, and product protection during distribution. Available in configurations to suit 500ml, one litre, and two litre standard tub sizes, with custom dimensions for non-standard formats. Ice cream cups in branded secondary packaging are also available for single-serve counter retail formats.

The front panel of an ice cream tub box is the primary brand display surface in the retail environment – it needs to communicate the flavour, the brand identity, and the quality positioning of the product clearly in a freezer display where multiple competing products are visible simultaneously.

Ice Cream Bar and Novelty Boxes

A format for individually wrapped ice cream bars, drumsticks, sandwiches, and other novelty formats sold in multipacks. A novelty multipack box holds four, six, or eight individual units in a configuration that presents them clearly at the point of sale and protects them during distribution.

The interior configuration of a novelty multipack needs to hold each individually wrapped unit securely without movement – ice cream bars that shift within the box during transit can damage their individual wrappers, which affects the product quality and presentation at the point of sale.

    Ice Cream Sandwich Boxes

A format specifically for ice cream sandwiches – flat, square or rectangular, and wider relative to their height than most other novelty ice cream formats. Ice cream sandwiches need a box configured for their specific footprint, with adequate height clearance above the product and a construction that prevents the sandwiches from being compressed during stacking.

Available in single-serve and multipack configurations. Single-serve ice cream sandwich boxes are a growing format in premium and artisan ice cream retail, where the individual product is priced and presented as a premium item.

    Ice Cream Gift Sets

A premium format for ice cream gifting – a curated selection of flavours or a signature collection presented as a gift. Ice cream gift sets are a growing format in the premium artisan ice cream market, particularly for Christmas and summer seasonal gifting where a premium local ice cream brand makes a distinctive and locally relevant gift.

The packaging needs to function as both a cold storage container and a gift item – which requires careful specification of both the insulation and temperature management elements and the exterior finish and presentation. A gift box that looks premium on the outside but can’t maintain the ice cream at the right temperature through the gifting experience is a functional failure.

    Wholesale and Catering Boxes

A high-volume format for restaurant and cafe ice cream supply, catering delivery, and wholesale distribution. Structural robustness, stacking strength, and consistent temperature performance through the distribution chain are the primary requirements. Print requirements are typically simpler than for retail formats – product identification, flavour, weight, and storage instructions.

Choosing the Right Ice Cream Box Configuration

The configuration decisions for ice cream packaging depend primarily on the product format – tub, novelty, sandwich, or bar – and the retail environment.

Standard tub sizes simplify the specification for most retail products. Ice cream tubs in the Australian retail market are relatively standardised at 500ml, one litre, and two litre sizes, which means the outer box dimensions are relatively predictable for standard product formats. Non-standard tub sizes – premium artisan formats, limited edition shapes – require custom box dimensions. The box needs to fit the tub precisely, with minimal clearance on all sides to prevent the tub from moving within the box and creating an unprofessional appearance when the box is picked up.

Novelty multipack configuration. A novelty ice cream multipack – four bars, six sandwiches, eight cones – needs an interior configuration that holds each individually wrapped unit in a specific position. The arrangement needs to be stable enough that the units don’t shift during transit, and the interior dimensions need to account for the actual wrapped dimensions of each unit – not the unwrapped product dimensions. If the product has a significant amount of wrapper material that adds to the effective dimensions, this needs to be factored into the box specification.

Chest freezer display design. Ice cream in a retail chest freezer is displayed horizontally – the top panel of the box is the primary display face, viewed from directly above. This is the opposite of most retail packaging design conventions, where the front panel is the primary display face. For ice cream sold through chest freezers, the top panel design needs to be as strong as the front panel design – and in some cases stronger, since it’s the only face the consumer sees in the chest freezer display context. If the product is sold through both chest freezers and upright cabinets, both the top and front panels need to work as primary display surfaces.

Upright freezer cabinet design. In an upright glass-door freezer cabinet, ice cream boxes are displayed standing upright, face-forward – which is the conventional retail display orientation. The front panel is the primary display face, and the brand hierarchy, flavour communication, and key product claims all need to read clearly through the glass door of the cabinet. The visual density of an upright freezer cabinet – multiple brands and SKUs visible simultaneously through the glass – makes differentiation through bold design particularly important in this display context.

    Ice Cream-Specific Considerations

A few properties of ice cream as a product that create packaging requirements specific to this category.

Minus 18 degrees Celsius places the highest demands on packaging materials. At minus 18, standard paperboard becomes more brittle – less flexible and more susceptible to cracking under stress. Durable, lightweight materials that maintain structural integrity at freezer temperatures are essential for ice cream packaging. The material specification needs to be confirmed for the full temperature range the packaging will experience – from production at ambient temperature through transportation at various temperatures to storage at minus 18 and back to ambient in the consumer’s home.

Freeze-thaw cycles in retail environments. A retail freezer is opened and closed hundreds of times a day. Each time the door opens, the internal temperature rises slightly before the refrigeration system restores it. Over time, the packaging on the shelf experiences repeated small temperature fluctuations – slight warming when the door opens, cooling when it closes. This thermal cycling, combined with the condensation that forms on the packaging surface when it warms slightly above the dew point, tests the durability of the material, the adhesion of the print, and the structural integrity of the box over an extended retail period. Ice cream packaging needs to maintain its appearance through this extended exposure, not just at the point of sale.

Brand blocking is a significant commercial strategy in ice cream retail. In a supermarket freezer aisle, a brand with multiple SKUs displayed together creates a visual block – a coherent area of shelf space that reads as a unified brand presence. For ice cream brands with a range of flavours or product types, the packaging design system needs to create a strong brand block effect when multiple units are displayed together. Consistent use of brand colour, typography, and structural design across the range is the foundation of an effective brand block strategy.

Premium artisan ice cream has elevated packaging expectations. The artisan ice cream market in Australia – small-batch producers using premium ingredients, local sourcing, and innovative flavours – has grown significantly and has developed a visual culture distinct from mass-market ice cream retail. Premium artisan packaging tends toward more considered design, better materials, and finish detail that communicates the premium positioning of the product. In a retail environment where premium artisan brands compete alongside mass-market brands, the packaging is often the primary differentiator that justifies the higher price point.

Novelty and kids market packaging has specific design conventions. Ice cream bars, cones, and novelty products marketed to children have a visual language – bold colours, character illustrations, fun typography, and a sense of playfulness – that’s distinct from premium adult-oriented ice cream packaging. These products need to appeal to both children and the adults making the purchase, which means communicating fun to one audience and quality or value to the other simultaneously. The design brief for novelty and kids ice cream packaging is substantially different to the brief for premium adult ice cream packaging.

Summer is the peak season, but planning happens in winter. Ice cream consumption peaks in the Australian summer – November through February – which means the seasonal demand surge happens in the same period as Christmas. For ice cream brands with seasonal packaging – summer flavours, Christmas limited editions – the packaging needs to be planned, produced, and delivered before the peak begins. With air freight lead times of 3 to 4 weeks, seasonal packaging for Christmas and summer needs to be ordered by October at the latest.

Print & Finishing for Ice Cream Boxes

Ice cream packaging spans a wider visual range than almost any other frozen food category – from bold, colourful kids’ novelty packaging to refined, minimal premium artisan design.

Mass retail ice cream packaging is designed for shelf impact and brand recognition in a visually competitive environment. Bold colour, large flavour photography or illustration, prominent brand marks, and high-contrast design are all important. Full colour printing with gloss lamination is the dominant approach – the gloss finish maintains visual impact in the freezer environment and gives colours the saturation they need to read clearly through a frosted or condensed freezer door. Die cutting for windows and shaped panels, spot UV for selective detail, and embossing for brand mark distinction are all available finishing options.

Premium artisan ice cream packaging uses matte lamination, eco friendly kraft paper stock, and a design approach that communicates craftsmanship and quality without the bold visual language of mass retail. Sustainable materials and biodegradable options are available for artisan brands with environmental commitments – a growing expectation in the premium food market.

Novelty and kids packaging is at the opposite end of the visual spectrum from premium artisan – bright, high-energy, character-driven, and designed to appeal immediately to a young consumer. Full colour printing with vivid, saturated colours on a gloss laminate is the standard approach. The design needs to communicate fun and flavour quickly, with large, legible text and visual elements that read clearly at the freezer aisle scale.

Low-temperature print performance. Standard inks and laminates specified for ambient food packaging may not maintain their quality at minus 18 degrees Celsius. The print specification for ice cream packaging needs to confirm that the inks, coatings, and laminates used will maintain colour accuracy and adhesion through the temperature range the packaging will experience from production through to the consumer’s freezer.

All boxes are printed using full colour printing in CMYK. Files should be supplied as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or high-resolution print-ready PDF, with fonts outlined and graphics embedded.
