Custom Makeup Product Boxes
Makeup packaging operates in one of the most visually competitive retail environments of any consumer product category. A beauty counter, a Priceline shelf, or a Sephora display presents dozens of competing products simultaneously – each competing for attention through colour, design, and the immediate visual impression of quality. In this environment, packaging is not just a container; it’s the product’s primary sales tool.
The makeup category is also one where the packaging directly communicates the product itself. A lipstick’s colour is visible through its bullet or communicated through the cap colour. An eyeshadow palette’s shade range is visible through the pan arrangement. A nail polish shade is shown through the bottle. In these cases, the packaging and the product are inseparable – the design system needs to communicate the product’s specific shade, finish, and collection positioning alongside the brand identity.
Makeup also has an extraordinarily diverse range of product formats. Lipstick, eyeshadow, foundation, mascara, nail polish, blush, bronzer, lip liner, brow pencil – each has a different physical format, different packaging conventions, and different consumer interaction dynamics. The brief for a lipstick box is nothing like the brief for an eyeshadow palette, which is nothing like the brief for a nail polish bottle. Understanding the specific format is the starting point for every makeup packaging brief.
Our custom makeup boxes are manufactured to suit the specific product format, shade communication requirements, and brand positioning of your makeup business. We’ve been supplying makeup and cosmetic packaging to Australian businesses since 2017.

Makeup Categories We Package
We manufacture custom packaging across the full range of makeup product formats. Each category has its own dedicated page with detailed product-specific information.
Makeup Boxes
Custom packaging for makeup collections, cosmetic sets, and primary makeup products including foundation, blush, bronzer, and pressed powder. Makeup product packaging needs to communicate shade range, finish, and collection identity in a compact format that competes effectively on a retail shelf or beauty counter.
Eye Shadow Boxes
Custom packaging for eyeshadow palettes, eye products, and eye makeup collections. Eye shadow palettes are one of the most complex makeup packaging formats – the palette itself is a display object that shows the shades directly, and the outer packaging needs to communicate the palette’s collection identity and shade story while protecting the pressed pigments from breakage.
Lipstick Boxes
Custom packaging for lipstick, lip colour, and lip product collections. Lipstick packaging is one of the most brand-expressive formats in the makeup category – the lipstick bullet, the cap design, and the outer box together communicate the brand’s aesthetic positioning and the product’s specific shade and finish identity.
Lip Balm Boxes
Custom packaging for lip balm, lip treatment, tinted lip balm, and lip care products. Lip balm packaging spans the full market range from mass retail pharmacy products to premium lip treatment products positioned at the premium beauty tier. The packaging brief varies significantly across this range.
Nail Polish Boxes
Custom packaging for nail polish, gel polish, and nail colour products in secondary carton formats. Nail polish packaging needs to communicate the shade clearly – the colour itself is the primary purchase driver – alongside any finish or formula differentiation. The secondary carton provides brand communication context that the small nail polish bottle alone can’t achieve effectively.
Nail Care Boxes
Custom packaging for nail care products – nail treatments, base coats, top coats, nail strengtheners, and nail care accessories. Nail care packaging communicates technical efficacy rather than colour appeal, and the brief is closer to the skincare category than the colour cosmetics category.
Choosing the Right Makeup Box Configuration
Shade communication is a primary design requirement for colour cosmetics. Any makeup product with a colour element – lipstick, eyeshadow, nail polish, blush – needs to communicate the specific shade clearly on the packaging. A consumer who can’t determine the colour from the packaging before purchase has a significant purchase barrier. Shade communication approaches include a colour window that shows the product, a swatch on the outer carton, a colour cap or bullet that shows the shade directly, or a shade name and number system that’s clear enough for the consumer to make a confident selection. The approach should be chosen based on the product format and the consumer’s ability to evaluate the shade from the packaging alone.
Collection identity needs to work across multiple SKUs. Most makeup brands sell in collections – a season’s lipstick range, an eyeshadow palette series, a coordinated colour collection. The packaging design system needs to differentiate individual SKUs clearly – different shades, different products – while maintaining strong collection and brand identity across the range. A consumer standing in front of a display of twenty lipstick boxes in the same collection needs to be able to identify the specific shade they want quickly. The design hierarchy – brand, collection, shade name and number – needs to work at the individual SKU level and as a complete collection presentation.
Eyeshadow palette packaging needs to protect pressed pigments. Pressed powder eyeshadow is one of the most fragile makeup formats – the pans break under impact, and broken pans are an immediate product failure. The outer box for an eyeshadow palette needs to protect the palette from the drops and impacts of retail handling and courier delivery. For palettes sold through DTC channels, the packaging protection requirements are more demanding than for retail shelf products. The insert or cushioning around the palette needs to absorb impact without transmitting it to the pressed pigments.
Lipstick outer carton dimensions must account for the bullet and cap together. A lipstick outer carton is sized for the lipstick in its capped, closed configuration. The carton height needs to accommodate the cap at its full height – which for some lipstick styles with tall caps is significantly more than the bullet height alone. The carton also needs to hold the lipstick securely enough that it doesn’t slide or rattle within the carton, which creates a poor quality impression at the point of sale.
Makeup Box-Specific Considerations
The beauty retail environment rewards visual impact and shelf differentiation. A makeup product on a beauty retail shelf is competing against dozens of products in the same category simultaneously. The consumer’s first decision – which product to pick up and examine – is made almost entirely on visual impression. A packaging design that has strong visual impact, that creates a distinctive impression against the surrounding products, and that communicates quality at first glance has a commercial advantage over a packaging design that’s competent but undifferentiated. For makeup brands entering retail, shelf differentiation is as important a brief as brand consistency.
Social media has transformed makeup packaging expectations. Makeup is the most photographed product category on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Beauty influencers unbox makeup collections, swatch products on camera, and create content that reaches millions of viewers. The packaging quality and aesthetic is a direct subject of this content – beautiful packaging generates positive coverage; poor packaging generates negative commentary. For makeup brands with any social media marketing strategy, the packaging needs to perform as well on camera as it does in person. Interesting textures, distinctive design elements, and packaging that photographs well are all commercial considerations.
Limited edition and collaboration packaging drives disproportionate commercial impact. Makeup brands regularly release limited edition collections – seasonal collections, artist collaborations, anniversary editions – with distinctive packaging that creates collecting behaviour and purchase urgency. The packaging for limited edition releases is often the primary driver of the commercial success of those releases. For makeup brands with a strong community and collecting culture, investing in exceptional packaging for limited editions has a return that significantly exceeds the standard range. The limited edition box is as much the product as the makeup inside it.
ACCC cosmetic labelling requirements apply to all makeup products sold in Australia. Makeup products sold in Australia must carry INCI-format ingredient declarations, the name and address of the responsible party, the net weight, and any relevant warnings. For products with specific active ingredients – sunscreen, AHA or BHA exfoliants, retinol – additional labelling requirements may apply depending on the concentration and the claims made. The packaging design must accommodate all mandatory information clearly within the available label area. This is a design constraint that should be planned from the beginning of the packaging brief, not resolved after the design is developed.
The indie makeup market is one of the most packaging-literate consumer segments. Independent makeup consumers – the community around indie makeup brands, small-batch cosmetics, and artisan beauty – are among the most packaging-aware consumers in any retail category. They discuss packaging quality, photography, and design extensively in online communities. A new indie makeup brand’s packaging is evaluated and commented on by this community immediately upon release. For indie makeup brands, packaging quality is a community standing issue as well as a commercial one.
Print & Finishing for Makeup Boxes
Makeup packaging spans the full range of the beauty market’s visual culture – from the bold maximalism of drugstore colour cosmetics to the refined restraint of premium makeup brands.
Mass-market makeup packaging uses bold colour, strong shade communication, and a design that creates immediate visual impact in a competitive retail environment. Full colour printing on a gloss laminate, prominent shade names and numbers, and a design that reads clearly at shelf distance are all commercial priorities. For drugstore and pharmacy makeup, the packaging needs to work hard in a high-density display environment.
Premium makeup packaging uses the restrained, quality-forward aesthetic of the premium beauty category. Clean design, considered typography, matte or soft-touch laminate, and finish detail that communicates premium positioning. The shade communication needs to be as precise as the shade itself – a premium lipstick shade deserves packaging that communicates it with the same precision as the lipstick’s formulation.
Indie and independent makeup packaging has the most creative freedom and the most distinctive aesthetic in the category. Independent makeup brands often use packaging as a primary brand identity statement – bold illustration, unexpected colour palettes, design that references art, culture, or the brand’s specific world. The packaging is part of what the indie consumer is buying, and it should be designed with that intention.
Limited edition collection packaging benefits from the most premium finishing treatment – foil stamp, emboss, special print effects, and construction quality that communicates the significance of the release. The packaging for a limited edition makeup collection should feel as special as the collection itself – an object worth keeping after the product is used.
All boxes are printed using full colour printing in CMYK. Files should be supplied as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or high-resolution print-ready PDF, with fonts outlined and graphics embedded.
