Custom Waffle Boxes
Waffles present one of the more specific packaging challenges in the food-to-go and takeaway category. The product is hot, steam-producing, typically covered in toppings that can be liquid or semi-liquid, and the defining quality of the product – the crispy, light exterior – is directly threatened by the packaging if it’s not designed correctly. A waffle in a sealed box will steam itself soft within minutes, destroying the freshness and crispiness that makes the product worth buying. Durable, well-specified packaging with your brand logo is the difference between a product that arrives as intended and one that doesn’t.
Waffles are also one of the most photographed food products in Australian cafe, food truck, and dessert bar culture. Before a waffle is eaten, it’s photographed. The packaging is part of that photograph – whether as a backdrop, a holder, or a branded frame for the product. For food businesses where social media visibility is a meaningful part of the marketing, the packaging design has an audience that extends beyond the immediate consumer.
Our custom waffle boxes are manufactured to suit the specific waffle format, service context, and brand requirements of your business. We’ve been supplying food-to-go packaging to Australian food businesses since 2017.

Waffle Box Styles We Offer
We manufacture custom waffle boxes across a range of styles to suit different waffle formats and service contexts. All styles are available in custom sizes, materials, and finishes.
Classic Waffle Boxes
A flat, rectangular or square box format suited to standard Belgian or American-style waffles. The box needs to hold the waffle flat, provide adequate lid clearance for toppings, and have ventilation to prevent steam from softening the waffle during the carry time between service and consumption.
Available with full or partial lid configurations, with ventilation perforations where required, and in dimensions suited to standard waffle iron sizes. The exterior print surface is the primary branding opportunity for the business serving the waffle.
Cone Waffle Holders and Boxes
A format for waffle cones and waffle cups – the cone or cup format used for ice cream, gelato, or soft serve. The packaging needs to hold the cone or cup securely at a comfortable carrying angle, protect the hand from the heat of the freshly made cone, and be easy to hold with one hand while the other hand is occupied with eating.
Available in sleeve, box, and holder formats. For food trucks and dessert bars where waffle cones are a signature product, a well-designed branded holder is a significant brand touchpoint that’s carried through the eating experience.
Waffle on Stick Boxes
A format for waffles served on a stick – a growing format in the dessert bar and food truck market. A stick waffle needs packaging that holds the stick securely, protects the waffle body from contact with the consumer’s hands, and presents the product at an angle that shows off any toppings or coatings.
This is a specific packaging format that needs to be designed around the actual dimensions of the waffle and the stick length. Generic packaging that doesn’t account for the stick format will result in either a stick that protrudes awkwardly or a waffle that sits too deep in the box to be eaten comfortably.
Bubble Waffle Boxes
A format specifically for Hong Kong-style bubble waffles – the distinctive egg-shaped grid pattern that produces a waffle with a different structural profile to a standard flat waffle. Bubble waffles are typically served folded into a cone shape and filled with ice cream, fruit, and toppings. The packaging needs to hold the cone structure without crushing the bubbles, and accommodate the height of the toppings above the cone.
Bubble waffles are one of the most visually distinctive food products in Australian cafe and dessert culture, and the packaging needs to showcase rather than obscure the product. The format is popular on social media, which makes the visual relationship between the packaging and the product more important than for most other food-to-go formats.
Waffle Gift Boxes
A premium format for gifting – a selection of waffle mixes, toppings, or waffle-making accessories presented as a gift. Waffle gift boxes are a growing format for the home baking and food gifting market, particularly for Christmas, birthdays, and occasions where a fun and practical food gift is appropriate.
The interior configuration needs to hold each component in a deliberate arrangement, and the exterior finish needs to match the gifting context. A well-designed waffle gift box communicates the experience of making waffles at home as much as the ingredients inside it.
Choosing the Right Waffle Box Configuration
The configuration decisions for waffle packaging depend primarily on the waffle format, the topping profile, and the service context.
Waffle shape determines the box footprint. A standard square Belgian waffle, a round American waffle, a long rectangular waffle, and a bubble waffle cone all have different footprints that require different box configurations. The box dimensions need to be based on the actual dimensions of your specific waffle product – not a generic waffle size. A box that’s too small for the waffle will compress or damage it; a box that’s too large allows the waffle to move, which can dislodge toppings and damage the product’s presentation.
Topping height and stability determine lid clearance and structural requirements. A plain waffle with butter has minimal topping height requirements. A waffle with a scoop of ice cream, a pile of whipped cream, and a drizzle of chocolate sauce has a significantly different lid clearance requirement and may need structural features to prevent the toppings from contacting the lid during transport. The lid clearance specification needs to account for the highest point of the toppings as served, not just the height of the waffle base.
Liquid topping containment. Syrups, caramel sauces, and melting ice cream produce liquid that will pool in the bottom of the box during transport. A standard paperboard base that isn’t specified for liquid resistance will become saturated and structurally compromised within minutes. For waffles with liquid toppings, a liquid-resistant base – either a coated board or a liner – is a practical necessity, not an optional upgrade.
Service speed and box assembly. In a food truck or busy cafe environment, waffle boxes are assembled and handed over quickly during service. A box format that takes more than a few seconds to assemble, or that requires both hands to close cleanly, creates service bottlenecks during peak periods. For high-volume waffle service contexts, the practicality of the assembly process is as important as the visual design of the box.
Waffle-Specific Considerations
A few properties of waffles as a product that create packaging requirements specific to this format.
Steam from hot waffles softens the exterior crust. The defining quality of a well-made waffle is the crisp, light exterior – and that exterior is directly vulnerable to moisture. A freshly made waffle sealed in an airtight box will begin to soften within minutes as the steam from the hot product condenses on the interior surfaces and falls back onto the waffle. Ventilation – through perforations in the lid or walls, or through a partially open design – allows steam to escape without the waffle cooling too rapidly. The right level of ventilation is product-specific: a waffle eaten within five minutes of service needs different ventilation than one that will be carried for twenty minutes before consumption.
Bubble waffles have a unique structural challenge. The distinctive ball-shaped protrusions of a bubble waffle are both the product’s signature visual feature and its most structurally vulnerable element. The bubbles are hollow and thin-walled – any compression collapses them and permanently damages the texture and visual appearance of the product. The packaging for a bubble waffle needs to hold the product in a position where the bubbles are not under any compression from the box walls or lid. For the cone configuration in which bubble waffles are typically served, the packaging needs to support the cone without squeezing it.
Liquid topping migration is a visual and structural problem. Syrup, caramel sauce, and melted toppings don’t stay on the waffle – they flow down and pool at the base of the box. This creates two problems: the packaging base becomes saturated and weakens, and the visual presentation of the product deteriorates as the toppings redistribute. Liquid-resistant materials on the base and lower walls of the box, combined with a design that contains the liquid within the footprint of the product, address both problems. For waffles where liquid topping migration is a known issue, testing the packaging with a fully loaded product before finalising the specification is worth doing.
Waffle packaging is visible in social media content. Waffles – particularly bubble waffles and heavily topped cafe waffles – are among the most photographed food products in Australian food culture. Before a waffle is consumed, it’s photographed from multiple angles and shared on social media. The packaging is visible in those photographs – sometimes as a backdrop, sometimes as a branded holder that frames the product. For food businesses where social media visibility is part of the marketing strategy, the packaging design has an extended audience beyond the immediate consumer, and the visual relationship between the packaging and the product matters accordingly.
Food truck and market contexts require practical durability. Waffles sold from food trucks and market stalls are typically assembled in a high-intensity service environment – limited bench space, high volume during peak periods, and less controlled conditions than a fixed kitchen. The packaging needs to be robust enough to handle being assembled on an uneven surface, filled with a hot, topping-loaded product, and handed to a customer who may be standing in a crowd. A box that’s elegant but fragile is a liability in this context.
Print & Finishing for Waffle Boxes
Waffle packaging sits primarily in the street food, cafe, and food truck market – a context where brand personality and visual energy are important, but practical function is equally so.
Street food and cafe waffle packaging benefits from bold, warm design that communicates the enjoyment and indulgence of the product. Waffles are an inherently fun food – the packaging should reflect that. Full colour printing with matte or gloss laminate on a kraft or white base stock is common, with spot UV or embossing on the logo or key design elements adding a tactile quality that elevates the brand impression. The design should communicate the brand logo and the product in a way that reads well when photographed alongside the product.
Bubble waffle packaging has developed its own visual culture, influenced by the Hong Kong street food aesthetic from which the product originates. Bold colour, graphic design, and a visual energy that matches the fun and novelty of the product are all appropriate. For Australian bubble waffle operators who want to reference the Hong Kong heritage of the product, design elements that communicate that cultural context can be effective.
For premium waffle gift boxes, a more refined approach is appropriate – clean design, premium materials, and a finish that communicates the quality of the gift. The gift box for a waffle kit or a premium waffle mix needs to look as considered as the product inside it.
All boxes are printed using full colour printing in CMYK. Files should be supplied as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or high-resolution print-ready PDF, with fonts outlined and graphics embedded.
