Custom Snack Boxes
Snack is one of the broadest and most competitive food categories in Australian retail. Custom snack packaging covers a wide range of snack foods – chips, potato chips, crackers, popcorn, rice crackers, protein balls, granola bites, savoury biscuits, and trail mix – all competing for the same retail shelf space, the same convenience channel facing, and increasingly, the same DTC subscription and gifting occasions. The packaging needs to work across all of these contexts, and the requirements at each are substantially different.
What all snack products share is a consumer who is making a fast decision. Snack purchases are often impulsive or habitual, made quickly in a high-distraction retail environment or chosen from a delivery app in seconds. The packaging has a short window to communicate brand, flavour, and product quality – and in a category where shelf variety is enormous, that window matters.
Our custom snack boxes are manufactured to suit the specific product format, retail environment, and brand positioning of your snack range. We’ve been supplying snack packaging to Australian food businesses since 2017.

Snack Box Styles We Offer
We manufacture custom snack boxes across a range of styles to suit different products and sales channels. All styles are available in custom sizes, materials, and finishes.
Retail Snack Boxes
The standard format for snack products sold through supermarkets, convenience stores, and health food retailers. A retail snack box needs to meet shelf display requirements – stable, stackable, with adequate face area for product name, flavour, weight, ingredient declaration, allergen information, and nutritional panel – while communicating the brand and product clearly at the point of sale.
Most snack products have an inner packaging layer – a sealed foil or plastic pouch, a resealable bag, or an individual wrapper – that handles the primary food safety and freshness function. The outer box provides retail structure, a larger print surface, and a shelf presence that a flexible pouch alone doesn’t achieve. The box dimensions need to fit the inner packaging at its filled dimensions.
Snack Gift Boxes
A format for premium snack gifting – a curated selection of artisan snacks, a mixed flavour assortment, or a themed snack collection presented as a gift. Snack gift boxes are a growing format in the Australian gifting market, particularly for corporate gifting, hamper components, and personal occasions where the recipient is health-conscious or food-curious.
The interior configuration needs to hold each snack product in a deliberate arrangement – either individual inner pouches in configured compartments, or an open arrangement that shows the variety of the selection when the box is opened. The exterior finish needs to match the gifting occasion – a premium artisan snack gift box at Christmas warrants construction and finish that reflects the quality of what’s inside.
Snack Subscription Boxes
A format for direct-to-consumer snack delivery – a curated selection of snacks delivered on a regular schedule. Snack subscription boxes are one of the fastest-growing DTC food formats in Australia, driven by the combination of the discovery appeal of the category and the convenience of home delivery.
The packaging needs to protect the contents through courier delivery, which is more physically demanding than retail distribution, and create a positive unboxing experience that subscribers look forward to. For subscription services that change their product selection each delivery, the packaging design needs to accommodate variety without requiring a full redesign each cycle.
Mixed Snack Assortment Boxes
A format for mixed snack selections – different flavours of the same product, or a curated variety of complementary snack types. Mixed assortment boxes are effective for brand discovery – introducing new customers to a range they might not have tried otherwise – and for gifting contexts where variety is part of the appeal.
The interior configuration needs to identify each snack variety clearly and hold each inner pouch or wrapper in position. A window panel that shows the variety of the selection before the box is opened communicates the range of the product more effectively than print alone.
Bulk and Wholesale Boxes
A high-volume format for wholesale supply, convenience store bulk orders, and food service. Structural robustness and efficient volume are the primary requirements. Bulk snack boxes need to hold the product without crushing during transit, stack safely in a warehouse, and be clearly identified with product name, weight, allergen information, and storage instructions.
Choosing the Right Snack Box Configuration
The configuration decisions for snack packaging depend on the product format, the inner packaging type, and the sales channel.
Inner packaging compatibility is the primary food safety consideration. Most snack products have a primary packaging layer – a sealed foil or barrier pouch, a resealable bag, or an individual wrapper – that handles the direct food contact and food safety functions. The outer box is secondary packaging. The box dimensions need to fit the inner packaging at its filled dimensions, with adequate clearance for the lid to close cleanly and for the inner packaging to be removed and accessed easily. For resealable products, the box needs to accommodate the inner packaging at both full and partially consumed fill levels.
Product density and weight vary significantly across snack types. Popcorn is very light per unit volume; rice crackers are denser; nuts and trail mix are denser still. A box of popcorn that looks substantial may weigh only 80 to 100 grams; a box of mixed nuts of the same physical size may weigh 400 grams or more. The base construction of the box needs to be specified for the actual weight of the product, not the apparent size of the package. For products at the denser end of the snack spectrum, the base needs adequate construction to prevent failure during transit and retail handling.
Single flavour vs mixed assortment interior design. A single-flavour snack box has straightforward interior requirements – one inner pouch in a box that fits it. A mixed assortment box needs to hold multiple inner pouches or varieties in a deliberate arrangement, with each variety clearly identified. The interior configuration for a mixed assortment is more complex and needs to be designed alongside the box specification.
Retail vs gifting vs subscription. These three channels have different primary requirements. Retail packaging needs shelf legibility, compliance labelling space, and a design that competes effectively in a high-density shelf environment. Gifting packaging needs construction and finish that presents as a considered gift. Subscription packaging needs to protect through courier delivery and create a positive unboxing experience. Each channel may warrant its own packaging specification rather than a single format applied across all three.
Snack-Specific Considerations
A few properties of snack products that create specific packaging requirements.
Moisture is the primary quality risk for crispy snack products. A chip, cracker, or popcorn that has absorbed moisture from its environment loses its defining quality – the crunch. In the snack category, texture is often as important as flavour, and a product that arrives soft or stale is an unacceptable quality failure. The inner packaging handles the primary moisture barrier function, but the outer box should not compromise that barrier. A box material that is itself hygroscopic, or that allows moisture ingress through poor construction, can shorten the effective shelf life of the product inside.
Oil and grease migration affects structural integrity. Chips, crackers, and many savoury snacks have a significant oil content that can migrate into paperboard over time. A box that shows through-staining from oil migration is visually unappealing and structurally weakened – the oil degrades the structural properties of the board. For snack products with high oil content, a grease resistant material or interior lining is worth specifying to maintain both the structural integrity and the visual quality of the outer box throughout the product’s shelf life.
The snack shelf is one of the most competitive retail environments in food. The range of products on a supermarket snack shelf is enormous – dozens of brands, hundreds of SKUs, in a display environment where the consumer’s attention is divided and the purchasing decision is often made within a few seconds. Shelf appeal – the ability to catch the eye and communicate brand and flavour identity from a distance – is a primary packaging design objective for snack retail. Packaging that doesn’t differentiate clearly is at a commercial disadvantage in this environment.
The healthy snack market has a clean label aesthetic expectation. Health-positioned snack products – protein balls, grain crackers, low-sugar bars, air-popped popcorn – are sold to a consumer who reads labels and evaluates ingredient quality. Products catering to specific dietary needs – gluten free, vegan, allergen-free – need packaging that communicates those credentials clearly and prominently, as consumers with allergies or dietary preferences make purchasing decisions based on those declarations first. The packaging needs to communicate ingredient transparency, natural sourcing, and health credentials clearly and credibly, keeping the product fresh and maintaining the quality that health-conscious consumers expect.
Snack subscription boxes depend on the unboxing experience. A snack subscriber sees the packaging every delivery cycle. The quality and consistency of the unboxing experience – how the box opens, how the products are arranged inside, the print quality and consistency across multiple runs – builds or erodes the subscriber’s relationship with the brand over time. For subscription formats in particular, the investment in packaging design and quality compounds across the lifetime of the subscriber.
Gifting snack boxes are a growing market segment. Artisan snack brands, premium snack assortments, and food discovery gift boxes have become a significant part of the Australian gifting market. Christmas, corporate gifting, and personal occasions where the recipient is food-interested are all strong occasions for snack gifting. The packaging for snack gift boxes needs to present as a complete and considered gift – the construction and finish should match the price point and the occasion.
Print & Finishing for Snack Boxes
Snack packaging spans a wide visual range – from bold, colourful retail packaging to clean health food design to premium artisan gifting – and the print approach needs to match the specific market.
Conventional retail snack packaging is designed for shelf impact and category recognition. Bold colours, large flavour photography or illustration, high-contrast design, and a visual energy that communicates enjoyment and flavour are all important. Full colour printing on a gloss laminate is the dominant approach. The front panel needs to communicate the flavour and the brand clearly from a distance, in a shelf environment where multiple competing products are visible simultaneously.
Health snack packaging has a distinct aesthetic – ingredient-forward design, natural colour palettes, minimal processing cues, and a visual language that communicates quality and transparency. Matte laminate or kraft paper stocks suit this aesthetic better than high-gloss finishes. The front panel typically leads with the key health credential or ingredient highlight rather than flavour photography.
Snack gift box packaging warrants a step up in finish – matte laminate, foil stamp or emboss detail on the brand mark, and an interior presentation that shows the variety of the selection attractively. For premium artisan snack gifting, the packaging needs to present as a genuine gift item, not a retail product in nicer packaging.
Subscription box design needs to be consistent across multiple production runs and create a recognisable brand impression that subscribers look forward to seeing. A strong, consistent brand mark and colour system that holds up across repeated unboxing experiences builds brand equity with the subscriber over time.
All boxes are printed using full colour printing in CMYK. Files should be supplied as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or high-resolution print-ready PDF, with fonts outlined and graphics embedded. Free design support is included – we’ll produce a free 3D mockup for your approval before production begins, and handle minor artwork adjustments at no extra charge.
