Custom Spirits Boxes

Spirits sit at the premium end of the beverage category, and the packaging reflects that. A bottle of whisky, gin, rum, or other liquor is one of the highest single-unit price points in the food and beverage retail market, and premium branding through high quality printing and construction plays a direct role in justifying that price point. Shelf appeal in a bottle shop or liquor retail environment is competitive – packaging that communicates the quality of what’s inside before the bottle is even opened is a commercial advantage, not just an aesthetic one.

The gifting dimension makes this even more pronounced. Spirits are one of the most gifted products in the Australian market – Father’s Day, Christmas, and birthdays are all significant spirits gifting occasions – and the gift box is the first thing the recipient sees. It sets the expectation for everything that follows.

Our custom spirits boxes are manufactured to the finish standards and structural requirements of the premium beverage market. We’ve been supplying spirits packaging to Australian distilleries, bottle shops, and gifting businesses since 2017.

    Spirits Categories We Package

We manufacture custom packaging across the full range of spirits categories. All styles are available with custom sizes, materials, and finishes suited to the premium end of the beverage market.

    Whisky and Whiskey Boxes

Whisky is the highest-value category in the spirits gifting market, and the packaging expectations reflect that. Single bottle presentation boxes, collector edition cases, and limited release packaging for Scotch, Japanese, Irish, and Australian whisky. The packaging for premium whisky is often as much a part of the product story as the liquid itself – particularly for aged, limited release, and collector-grade bottles.

    Gin Boxes

Gin has been the fastest-growing spirits category in Australia over the past decade, driven largely by the craft distillery movement. Australian craft gin producers have developed a strong visual culture for their packaging, with botanical illustration, origin-led storytelling, and distinctive bottle shapes that the packaging needs to accommodate and complement.

    Vodka Boxes

Clean, minimalist packaging is the dominant aesthetic in the premium vodka category – the packaging needs to communicate purity, quality, and brand distinctiveness without over-complicating the visual. Gift set formats are common, particularly in the premium and ultra-premium segments.

    Rum Boxes

Rum packaging spans from Caribbean-heritage brands with rich, dark visual aesthetics to clean, contemporary Australian craft distillery presentations. Gift set formats pairing rum with mixers or cocktail accessories are a strong product for the gifting market.

    Tequila and Mezcal Boxes

A growing category in the Australian premium spirits market. Artisan tequila and mezcal often come in distinctive, irregular bottle shapes that require custom-fitted inserts, and the packaging visual language ranges from Mexican craft heritage aesthetics to clean, contemporary premium presentations.

    Craft Spirits Gift Sets

Curated gift sets pairing a bottle of spirits with branded glassware, a jigger, cocktail recipe cards, or mixers. The interior of the box needs to hold each component in a deliberate arrangement that presents the set as a cohesive product, with custom inserts configured to the specific dimensions of each item.

Choosing the Right Spirits Box Configuration

The configuration decisions for spirits packaging are driven primarily by the bottle format, the market positioning of the product, and whether the packaging is for retail, gifting, or collector applications.

Rigid box is the standard format for premium spirits. Unlike wine or beer, where folding carton is common for everyday retail, spirits packaging at the mid-to-premium price point almost universally uses rigid box construction. The reasons are practical as much as aesthetic – a rigid box offers superior protection and durability for a heavy glass bottle, holds its shape regardless of handling conditions, and communicates a quality standard that folding carton can’t match in this product category. Available in a variety of sizes and configurations to suit different bottle formats and gift set requirements.

Bottle shape determines insert requirements. Spirits bottles are more shape-diverse than wine or beer. Standard cylindrical bottles, flat-faced bottles, square bottles, irregularly shaped artisan bottles, and bottles with pronounced base relief or shoulder details all have different insert requirements. A standard foam or cardboard insert configured for a cylindrical bottle won’t hold an irregular-shaped bottle safely – the bottle will move in transit and risk contact damage or breakage. The insert specification needs to be based on the actual three-dimensional shape of the bottle, not just its height and base diameter.

Single bottle vs gift set. A single bottle presentation box is the most common spirits retail format – it protects the bottle, enhances the shelf presence, and doubles as a gift box without any additional packaging. A gift set adds accessories – glasses, a jigger, a cocktail kit, a mixer – and requires a larger box with a custom interior configuration that holds each item in a specific position. The interior of a gift set box is a design project in its own right, and the arrangement of the components affects the visual impact of the unboxing experience.

Collector and limited edition formats. For aged whisky, limited release gin, and other collector-grade spirits, the packaging is part of the collectible value of the product. A collector bottle with a generic or low-quality box is a diminished product; a collector bottle with a case that’s designed and finished to the same standard as the bottle is a complete collector’s item. These applications warrant the highest level of construction and finish – numbered boxes, certificate holders, custom-fitted wooden or leatherette inserts, and finishing detail that reflects the rarity and value of the product.

    Spirits-Specific Considerations

A few properties of spirits as a category that create specific packaging requirements.

Spirits packaging has the highest finish expectations of any beverage category. The price point of premium spirits – $50, $100, $200, or more per bottle – creates a corresponding expectation for packaging quality. A customer buying a $150 bottle of whisky as a gift expects packaging that reflects that value. A box that looks or feels cheap at that price point creates a disconnect that damages the perceived value of the product and the brand. The investment in premium packaging for a premium spirits product is proportionate to the product value, not a luxury on top of it.

Irregular bottle shapes require custom inserts. Many craft distilleries – particularly in the gin and artisan spirits space – use distinctive bottle shapes as part of their brand identity. Flat-faced bottles, angular bottles, bottles with moulded relief, and bottles with unusual base shapes all require inserts that conform to the specific three-dimensional shape of the bottle. A generic cylindrical insert is not appropriate for these products – the bottle will sit poorly in the box, may tip during transport, and the gap between the bottle and the insert will be visually obvious when the box is opened. Custom-fitted foam or cardboard inserts, shaped to the specific bottle, are the right specification for irregular bottle formats.

The Australian craft gin market has strong packaging expectations. Australian craft gin has developed one of the most visually sophisticated packaging cultures of any domestic spirits category. Botanical illustration, hand-lettered typography, origin storytelling, and considered colour palettes are all common elements of craft gin packaging. The box design for an Australian craft gin needs to work with and extend the bottle label design – they should feel like parts of the same creative system, not independent executions. A craft gin with an elaborately designed label in a generic box is a missed opportunity.

Father’s Day and Christmas dominate the gifting calendar. Spirits gifting in Australia peaks sharply at Father’s Day in September and Christmas in December, with birthdays as a year-round secondary occasion. The lead time for custom packaging – 3 to 4 weeks for air freight – means Father’s Day packaging needs to be ordered by July and Christmas packaging by October. For distilleries and spirits brands with strong gifting volume, seasonal packaging planning is part of the annual production calendar. Limited edition gifting formats for these occasions – special print runs, seasonal finishing, or curated gift set configurations – can be a significant revenue driver when planned and executed well in advance.

Gift set inserts need to hold accessories securely. A gift set containing a bottle of spirits plus glasses, a jigger, or a cocktail kit needs an interior configuration that holds each component in position without movement during transport. A jigger sliding around inside a gift box and contacting the bottle during delivery damages both the product and the presentation. Custom cardboard or foam inserts, configured to the specific dimensions of each accessory, prevent this and ensure that the box opens to a neat, deliberate arrangement every time.

Glass bottle weight and fragility. A 700ml spirits bottle is one of the heavier single-unit products in the food and beverage category – typically 800 grams to over a kilogram including the liquid. The base of the box needs to support this weight reliably during all stages of transport and retail handling. For gift sets with multiple glass items – a bottle plus two crystal glasses, for example – the total load can be 2 kilograms or more. The construction specification needs to account for the combined weight, not just the primary bottle.

Print & Finishing for Spirits Boxes

Spirits packaging has the most demanding finish expectations of any beverage category, and the investment in premium finishing is directly reflected in the perceived value of the product.

Foil stamping is close to standard for premium spirits packaging. Gold and silver foil on the brand name, the product details, or key decorative elements is the most common finish detail in the category. Combined with offset printed full colour artwork, the contrast between foil-stamped elements and a matte lamination base is one of the most effective combinations in premium packaging – restrained, tactile, and immediately communicating quality. Spot UV applied selectively adds a further layer of luxury finishes that elevate the overall presentation.

Embossing and debossing add a physical dimension to the packaging that reinforces the quality message when the box is held. A debossed logo or brand name on the lid of a spirits box is felt before it’s seen, which creates a quality impression that begins before the box is even fully in view. For collector and limited edition formats, both embossing and foil stamping together are common – the combination of texture and metallic detail creates a surface that clearly communicates premium positioning.

Matte lamination is the dominant base finish in premium spirits packaging. It reads as considered and restrained – qualities that align with the premium positioning of most spirits brands. Soft-touch matte lamination adds a velvet-like surface quality that is particularly effective on dark base stocks, and is one of the most popular finishes for ultra-premium spirits packaging. Every element can be customised – from the lamination type to the placement of foil and spot UV detail – to suit your specific brand aesthetic.

Interior finish matters significantly in spirits packaging. When a spirits gift box is opened – particularly in a gifting context – the interior is the first thing seen. A premium exterior that opens to a plain, unfinished interior is a letdown. Custom-printed interior panels, fabric or leatherette lining, and a deliberately arranged product presentation all contribute to an interior that matches the expectation set by the exterior. For collector-grade and ultra-premium products, the interior finish is often as considered as the exterior.

All boxes are printed using full colour printing in CMYK. Files should be supplied as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or high-resolution print-ready PDF, with fonts outlined and graphics embedded. Free design support is included – we’ll produce a free 3D mockup for your approval before production begins, and handle minor artwork adjustments at no extra charge.
