Custom Truffle Boxes
Truffles occupy the premium end of the confectionery and gifting category. The product is priced higher, the occasions it’s associated with are more significant, and the expectation for packaging quality is correspondingly elevated. A truffle box that looks generic or feels flimsy undermines the product before it’s tasted – in a category where perceived value is a core part of what’s being sold, the packaging is not a secondary consideration.
Truffles also have specific physical properties that affect packaging decisions in ways that don’t apply to most other products. The surface is fragile – whether coated in cocoa powder, tempered chocolate, or a decorative topping – the product is temperature sensitive, and the round shape presents particular challenges for insert design. Getting these details right is what separates packaging that protects and presents a premium truffle product from packaging that merely contains it.
Our custom printed truffle boxes are manufactured to the precise insert tolerances and finish standards that the truffle market requires, using food grade materials throughout. We’ve been supplying chocolate truffle boxes and truffle packaging boxes to Australian chocolatiers, patisseries, and gifting businesses since 2017.

Choosing the Right Truffle Box Configuration
Truffles are relatively consistent in their individual dimensions compared to most bakery products, which makes configuration decisions primarily about quantity, insert design, and the occasion the box is intended for.
Insert design for round products. A round truffle sitting in a square cavity has four contact points where the chocolate or cocoa powder surface touches the corners of the insert. A round cavity sized to the diameter of the truffle holds the product at its equator and distributes contact more evenly – which reduces surface marking and keeps the truffle upright and stable. The insert cavity depth also matters: the truffle should sit with its top third above the insert surface so it’s visible and easy to remove, without being so shallow that it tips during transport.
Cocoa powder vs chocolate coating surfaces have different sensitivities. A truffle coated in cocoa powder will transfer that powder to anything it touches – the insert, the lid, and adjacent truffles. This is primarily a presentation issue rather than a structural one, but in a premium product it’s noticeable. Inserts with a smooth, non-absorbent surface minimise visible powder transfer. A chocolate-coated truffle is less likely to transfer surface material but more susceptible to contact marking if the coating has set with any imperfections.
Quantity configuration should match the occasion and the price point. Two and four-truffle configurations suit individual gifting and high-end favour formats where the price per unit is high and a small, perfectly presented box is the appropriate format. Six, nine, and twelve-unit boxes are the main gifting formats, suited to birthdays, Valentine’s Day, and Christmas. Larger configurations – sixteen and twenty-four units – suit corporate gifting and wholesale supply contexts.
Single layer vs multi-layer. Multi-layer truffle boxes create an impressive reveal – lifting one tray to reveal another layer below – but the construction needs to ensure the upper tray doesn’t apply pressure to the truffles in the lower layer. The insert depth needs to hold each truffle so that the base of the upper tray clears the top of the truffle below it. This is a tighter tolerance than most multi-layer configurations and needs to be specified carefully.
Truffle Box Styles We Offer
We manufacture custom truffle boxes across a range of configurations to suit different products, occasions, and markets. All styles are available in custom sizes, materials, and finishes.
Single & Two-Truffle Boxes
The most premium format in the truffle category – a single or two-truffle box is a complete luxury gift item in the smallest possible footprint. The packaging needs to justify the price of the product entirely on its own, which means the construction, the finish, and the opening experience all need to be at the top of the range.
Common applications include high-end retail single-serve formats, wedding and event favours, and Valentine’s Day gift items. A single truffle in a magnetic closure rigid box with foil stamp detail and a ribbon tie is a complete product in a way that most other bakery packaging formats aren’t – the box is kept and the experience of opening it is part of the value.
Multi-Truffle Boxes
Four, six, nine, and twelve-unit configurations for retail, gifting, and wholesale supply. These are the primary format for the truffle gifting market. The insert configuration – round cavities, grid spacing, and cavity depth – needs to be specified to the exact dimensions of your product, not to a generic truffle size.
Multi-truffle gift boxes are commonly presented with a full colour or foil-printed interior tray visible when the lid is opened, which adds another layer of visual impact to the unboxing experience. The colour and finish of the interior tray can be coordinated with or contrasted against the exterior to create a deliberate visual reveal.
Window Truffle Boxes
A window on a truffle box shows the product arrangement – the colours, the surface textures, and the decorative toppings of the truffles inside – before the box is opened. For a range with multiple flavours identified by different coatings or toppings, a window allows the customer to see the selection without opening the box.
Window placement for truffle boxes typically works best as a full-face lid window or a partial top panel, showing the top surface of each truffle in the arrangement. The window needs to be positioned and sized to show the full arrangement rather than just part of it – a window that shows four of six truffles is less effective than one that shows all six.
Truffle Gift Boxes
The premium gifting format for the truffle category. Rigid construction, magnetic or ribbon closure, foil stamped or embossed exterior, and a custom-printed or fabric-lined interior tray. These boxes are designed to be kept – they function as a keepsake or storage box after the truffles have been eaten, which adds a dimension of perceived value that disposable packaging doesn’t have.
Truffle gift boxes are the standard format for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, and anniversary gifting, as well as for luxury retail where the box is displayed as a product in its own right. The design, the materials, and the finish all need to reflect the price point and the occasion.
Ballotin-Style Boxes
The ballotin is the classic European format for chocolate and truffle gifting – a folded paperboard box with a characteristic angled lid that opens to reveal the contents in a pleated paper or fabric-lined interior. It’s a format with strong historical associations with premium confectionery, and it remains one of the most recognisable truffle packaging formats in the market.
Our ballotin-style boxes are available in a range of sizes with custom print and finish options. The format works particularly well for traditional truffle ranges and premium confectionery brands that want to reference the heritage of European chocolate craftsmanship in their packaging.
Truffle-Specific Considerations
A few properties of truffles that create packaging requirements specific to this product and not shared by other bakery formats.
Temperature sensitivity is a significant practical constraint. Truffles – particularly those made with fresh cream ganache – will soften, lose their shape, or develop bloom if exposed to temperatures above approximately 18 to 20 degrees Celsius for extended periods. This affects packaging decisions in two ways. First, the packaging material itself shouldn’t trap heat – a dark exterior box sitting in direct sunlight will heat the interior more than a lighter or insulated format. Second, if your product is being delivered or shipped rather than sold in a controlled retail environment, the packaging may need to be designed to work with cold packs or insulated outer packaging. A truffle box that looks beautiful but can’t be safely shipped in Australian summer conditions is a practical problem for any business with an online or delivery component.
Cocoa powder transfers and needs to be managed. A cocoa-dusted truffle in a non-treated insert will leave a visible cocoa residue on the insert surface within hours. This doesn’t affect the truffle itself but affects the presentation of the box – a box opened to reveal cocoa-stained inserts around otherwise perfect truffles is a visible quality drop in a premium product context. Smooth, non-porous insert materials minimise this. If your truffles are heavily dusted, a dark-coloured insert that makes the powder less visible is worth considering.
Chocolate bloom on delivery. Bloom – the white or grey streaking that appears on chocolate when it experiences temperature fluctuation – is a quality indicator that’s taken seriously by customers buying premium chocolate products. Bloom doesn’t affect the flavour but it signals that the product has been through temperature stress. Packaging that minimises temperature fluctuation during transit, combined with appropriate delivery timing, is part of the product quality chain for premium truffle businesses.
Valentine’s Day, Christmas, and Easter are the three peak seasons. Truffles are more concentrated in seasonal gifting occasions than almost any other confectionery product. Valentine’s Day and Christmas together account for a disproportionate share of annual truffle gifting volume. Production lead times of 3 to 4 weeks for air freight mean that seasonal packaging orders need to be placed significantly in advance of the peak – at least six to eight weeks before the occasion to allow for production and freight without expedited shipping costs.
Corporate gifting requires brand flexibility. Corporate truffle gifting is a premium market segment in Australia – truffles as end-of-year corporate gifts, client presents, and event favours are common. In this context, the packaging typically needs to carry the corporate client’s branding rather than the chocolatier’s, which means the print specification changes between orders. A box construction that can be reprinted with different artwork without changing the physical specification is practical for businesses servicing multiple corporate clients.
Print & Finishing for Truffle Boxes
Truffle packaging has the highest finish expectations of any product in the bakery and confectionery category. The product is positioned at the luxury end of the market, the occasions it’s purchased for are emotionally significant, and the unboxing experience is often shared – photographed, gifted in person, presented at a celebration. Every element of the packaging contributes to or detracts from that experience.
Dark base stocks are dominant in the truffle packaging market for good reason. Black, deep burgundy, and dark navy exteriors communicate luxury and restraint in a way that lighter colours don’t, and they contrast effectively with the gold and silver foil detail that’s common in this category. A black rigid box with gold foil stamping is the closest thing there is to a standard format for premium truffle gifting, and it performs consistently well across gifting, retail, and corporate contexts.
Foil stamping and embossing are both near-standard in premium truffle packaging. Foil stamping adds metallic detail to the logo, the brand name, or decorative elements – visible, tactile, and photographically distinctive. Embossing or debossing creates a physical impression in the substrate that’s felt when the box is held. Together, they create a surface quality that clearly communicates premium positioning before the box is opened.
Magnetic closures are the standard closure format for rigid truffle gift boxes. They open cleanly and silently, without the resistance or noise of a tuck closure or the fussiness of a ribbon tie as the primary mechanism. A ribbon can be added as a decorative element over a magnetic closure for occasions where a ribbon is part of the presentation aesthetic.
Interior finish matters as much as the exterior. The inside of a truffle box – the tray, the cavity liners, the base – is the first thing seen when the box is opened, and in a premium product it needs to match the exterior in quality. A custom-printed interior tray, a fabric or paper lining in a coordinated colour, and cavities finished to show no visible adhesive or folding marks all contribute to an interior presentation that matches the expectation set by the exterior.
All boxes are printed using full colour printing in CMYK. Files should be supplied as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or high-resolution print-ready PDF, with fonts outlined and graphics embedded. Free design support is included – we’ll produce a free 3D mockup for your approval before production begins, and handle minor artwork adjustments at no extra charge.
