Custom Macaron Boxes

Macarons are one of the most demanding products to package in the entire bakery category. The shells are fragile, the surface finish is the primary visual selling point, and the product is almost universally positioned as a premium or gift item. Packaging that doesn’t match that positioning – a box that’s slightly too loose, a finish that looks generic, or an insert that allows any lateral movement – undermines the product before it’s even tasted.

Our custom printed macaron boxes are manufactured using high quality materials to the precise dimensions and insert tolerances that macarons require, with elegant finishing options suited to the premium and gifting markets where macarons are most commonly sold. We’ve been supplying high quality macaron boxes to Australian patisseries, dessert businesses, and event caterers since 2017.

Choosing the Right Macaron Box Configuration

Macarons are unusually consistent in their individual dimensions compared to most baked goods – a standard macaron is typically 3.5 to 4.5 centimetres in diameter and around 4 centimetres tall – which makes configuration decisions more about quantity, orientation, and insert precision than about accommodating size variation.

Quantity configuration is the primary variable. Common formats are two, four, six, nine, twelve, and sixteen-unit configurations. The right choice depends on your primary sales context – a patisserie selling individual gift boxes typically needs a four or six-unit format; a wholesale or event supplier needs twelve and sixteen-unit boxes; a business with a strong single-serve retail trade needs a two-unit format that’s easy to carry and hand over at a counter. If you sell across multiple channels, you may need more than one configuration.

Flat vs upright orientation is a genuine decision with trade-offs on both sides. Flat orientation – macarons lying on their side – shows the colour of the shells through a window panel and allows a low-profile box that stacks well and travels efficiently. Upright orientation – macarons standing on their base – shows the full profile of the macaron including the filling and the feet, which is more visually compelling but requires a taller box with more lid clearance. The right choice depends on whether the side colour or the full profile better represents your product.

Insert precision is non-negotiable for macarons. Unlike most other baked goods where a small amount of movement in the box is tolerable, macarons cannot shift at all. The shell surface is smooth and brittle – any contact between macarons, or between a macaron and the wall of the box, will leave a mark or cause chipping. The insert holes need to be sized to hold each macaron snugly without applying pressure that could crack the shell. This is a tighter tolerance than most bakery packaging, and it’s worth specifying carefully.

Single layer vs multi-layer configurations affect both the visual presentation and the structural requirements of the box. A single-layer box is simpler to pack and easier to present as a gift. A multi-layer box holds more product and can create an impressive reveal when opened – each layer showing a different row of macarons – but requires a more robust construction and careful insert specification to prevent the weight of the upper layer from affecting the macarons below.

    Macaron Box Styles We Offer

We manufacture custom macaron boxes across a range of configurations to suit different products, quantities, and sales contexts. All styles are available in custom sizes, materials, and finishes.

    Single & Two-Macaron Boxes

The smallest format, most commonly used for individual retail sales, wedding favours, and event gifting. A single or two-macaron box is a complete gift item in a very compact format – the packaging needs to work entirely on its own as a presentation piece, without the visual mass of a larger box to carry the impression.

Single and two-macaron boxes are available with window panels, ribbon slots, and premium finishing options suited to the wedding and gifting market. These are among the highest-impact branding formats in patisserie retail – small, handled individually, and often kept by the recipient.

    Multi-Macaron Boxes

Four, six, nine, and twelve-unit configurations for retail, wholesale, and event supply. The colour arrangement of the macarons inside the box is itself a form of visual design – alternating or graduated colour sequences visible through a window panel create an immediate impression that requires no print work to achieve.

Multi-macaron boxes need internal inserts that hold each macaron individually, with spacing tight enough to prevent movement but not so tight that the shell is under pressure. We manufacture inserts to the exact diameter of your macaron, not to a generic size.

    Window Macaron Boxes

A window is close to essential for macaron packaging in a retail context. The colour of the shells is the primary visual selling point of the product – hiding it behind an opaque panel removes the most compelling reason to buy. A well-configured window that showcases the full arrangement of macarons creates an eye catching display that does more selling than almost any print treatment on the exterior.

Window placement for flat-orientation boxes should show the full face of the shells. For upright-orientation boxes, a top or front panel window that shows the profile and the filling is more effective. We can configure the window to suit your specific orientation and product dimensions.

    Macaron Tower Boxes

A specialist format for weddings, high-end events, and display applications. Macaron towers are a common centrepiece at wedding receptions and corporate events, and the packaging for individual tower tiers or the full assembled structure needs to handle transport without disturbing the arrangement.

Tower box configurations vary significantly depending on how the tower is assembled – whether the macarons are pre-stacked, delivered in individual tier boxes, or assembled on-site from bulk packaging. We can work with your specific tower format to develop a packaging solution that works for your delivery and presentation process.

    Macaron Gift Boxes

For premium retail, corporate gifting, and wedding favours, the packaging needs to function as a gift item in its own right. Our macaron gift boxes are available in rigid construction with premium finishing options including foil stamping, embossing, ribbon closures, and custom tissue or insert lining.

The colour schemes and finish of the box exterior should complement the macaron colours visible through the window, reinforcing your brand identity rather than competing with the product. This is worth thinking through at the design stage – a box that works beautifully with a pastel macaron range may not work with a bold or dark colour range.

    Macaron-Specific Considerations

Macarons have a set of packaging requirements that are distinct from every other bakery product, and several of them are easy to overlook until they cause problems.

The shell surface marks on contact. Macaron shells are smooth, brittle, and show every mark. Contact between two macarons, between a macaron and the insert wall, or between a macaron and the lid will leave a visible impression on the shell surface. In a product where the visual finish is the primary selling point, this is a significant quality issue. The insert specification is the main control point – the fit needs to be snug enough to prevent movement without applying any lateral pressure.

Macarons are highly sensitive to humidity. Moisture causes the shells to soften and the surface to lose its characteristic sheen. A macaron left in a poorly sealed box in a humid environment will deteriorate visibly within hours, affecting both freshness and visual appeal. All food grade materials we use are selected with this in mind. The sealing properties of the box – particularly the fit of the lid – matter for macaron packaging in a way that they don’t for most other bakery products. If your product is regularly transported in humid conditions or held for extended periods before sale, this is worth discussing at the specification stage.

The colour arrangement is part of the product presentation. A box of macarons arranged in a deliberate colour sequence – alternating, graduated, or matched to a brand palette – is a visual product in itself. The window configuration needs to show that arrangement to full effect, which means thinking about window size, placement, and how much of the interior is visible. A window that shows only part of the arrangement loses the impact of the full colour composition.

The wedding and events market has very high packaging expectations. Macarons are one of the most popular wedding favour products in the Australian market, and the packaging expectation in that context is at the premium end of the entire gifting category. Guests handle the box individually, photograph it, and keep it as a memento. The quality of the packaging reflects directly on the event host. Generic or low-finish packaging in a wedding context is a mismatch that clients notice.

Shelf life and display duration. Macarons have a shorter shelf life than most bakery products and are sensitive to the conditions they’re stored in. If your boxes are going into a retail display case for extended periods, the packaging needs to maintain its structural and visual integrity over that time. Oil migration is less of a concern with macarons than with donuts or pastries, but humidity sealing and insert stability over time are both worth considering.

Print & Finishing for Macaron Boxes

The macaron market is positioned at the premium end of the patisserie category, and the packaging expectations reflect that. A macaron box is almost always a gift item or a premium retail product – the finish needs to match that context.

The relationship between box colour and macaron colour matters more here than with any other bakery product. Because the macaron colours are visible through the window and are a primary part of the presentation, the box exterior colour needs to be chosen in relation to them. A white or ivory box is a safe neutral that works with almost any macaron colour palette. A coloured box can be very effective when the box and macaron colours are deliberately coordinated, but requires more care at the design stage.

Matte laminate with foil stamp detail is the most common finish combination in premium macaron packaging. The matte base reads as refined and considered; the foil adds a point of tactile and visual distinction that photographs well in the social media context where macaron products are heavily documented. Embossing or debossing the brand logo or a pattern into the lid surface adds another layer of quality that’s felt when the box is picked up. Spot UV is an equally strong option – applied selectively over the logo or key design elements, it creates a contrast between matte and gloss surfaces that is eye catching without adding colour.

For wedding favour applications, the level of personalisation typically goes beyond standard branding – couple names, wedding dates, monograms, and custom colour matching to the event palette are all common requirements. These are fully custom print jobs and need to be planned with sufficient lead time for artwork approval and production.

Ribbon closures and decorative elements are standard in the wedding and gifting segment. Ribbon slots, magnetic closures, and custom tissue or shredded paper lining all contribute to the unboxing experience and the overall perceived value of the product.

All boxes are printed using full colour printing in CMYK. Files should be supplied as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or high-resolution print-ready PDF, with fonts outlined and graphics embedded. Free design assistance is included – we’ll produce a free 3D mockup for your approval before production begins, and handle minor artwork adjustments at no extra charge.
