Custom Cake Boxes

Cakes are one of the harder baked goods to package well. The range of sizes is enormous – from a single slice to a five-tier wedding centrepiece – the structural demands vary significantly by weight and height, and the presentation expectation is high. A box that’s slightly too small, too flimsy, or poorly finished reflects directly on the product inside.

Our custom cake boxes are high quality packaging boxes manufactured to your exact dimensions, printed to your brand specifications, and built with sturdy construction to protect delicate cakes through transport and delivery. We’ve been supplying bakery boxes to businesses across Australia since 2017, and we understand that getting the details right – height tolerance, insert placement, closure type – is what separates good packaging from packaging that actually works.

Choosing the Right Cake Box Structure

Not all cake boxes are built the same, and the right structure depends on what you’re putting inside and how it’s getting to the customer.

Rigid boxes are the right choice for high-end cakes, heavy multi-layer cakes, and anything where the presentation on arrival is non-negotiable. They don’t flex under load, they hold their shape during transport, and they communicate premium quality before the lid is even opened. Wedding cakes, celebration cakes, and anything going into a gifting context typically warrant rigid construction.

Folding carton is better suited to high-volume production – single-layer cakes, slices, everyday retail product. It ships flat, costs less to produce, and assembles quickly. For businesses moving large numbers of units, folding carton delivers consistent quality at a price point that makes sense.

Height is the variable most people get wrong. Length and width are straightforward to measure, but cake height – particularly for tiered or frosted cakes – is frequently underestimated. The interior height of the box needs to clear the tallest point of the cake with enough room that the lid doesn’t compress the frosting. Measure from the base board to the top of any decoration, not just the cake itself, and build in a few extra millimetres. Our team can help you work out the right dimensions before you commit to production.

    Cake Box Styles We Offer

We manufacture custom cake boxes across a range of styles to suit different products and use cases. All styles are available in custom sizes, materials, and finishes.

    Standard Cake Boxes

The most common format – a four-sided box with a separate or hinged lid, available in folding carton or rigid construction. Suitable for single-layer cakes, cheesecakes, tarts, and most everyday retail product. The large print surface makes these one of the best branding opportunities in bakery packaging – four sides plus a lid, all fully printable.

Available in a wide range of sizes from individual serves up to large celebration cakes. If your product doesn’t fit a standard dimension, we manufacture to custom sizes as a matter of course.

    Window Cake Boxes

Window boxes add a transparent panel that lets customers see the product before they open the box – a unique way to build confidence at the point of sale and create an immediate visual impression. For cakes with decorative frosting, fresh flowers, or detailed piping work, a window does more to showcase your product than almost any amount of print work.

The placement of the window matters. A full-front window works well for single-layer cakes and tarts where the side profile is part of the presentation. A top panel window suits tiered cakes or anything where the decoration is primarily on the top surface. We can position the window wherever it best shows off your product.

    Tall Cake Boxes

Tiered cakes and tall celebration cakes need a box built specifically for their height requirements. Standard cake boxes simply aren’t deep enough, and trying to force a tall cake into a shallow box risks damaging the product and the presentation.

Our tall cake boxes are available in heights to suit cakes from two tiers upward, with reinforced base construction to handle the additional weight. Internal corner supports can be added to prevent the walls from flexing under load during transport. If you’re regularly making tiered cakes for events or weddings, a purpose-built tall box is worth the investment.

    Individual Slice Boxes

Single-serve slice packaging is a different brief to whole-cake packaging – it needs to be compact, easy to handle, and suited to retail display or takeaway. Our slice boxes are available in formats that hold the slice upright or flat depending on the product, with window panel options that show the layers and make the product sell itself on the shelf.

These work well as part of a coordinated range alongside full-cake boxes, using the same branding treatment across both formats for a consistent retail presence.

    Wedding Cake Boxes

Wedding cake packaging has a different set of requirements to everyday bakery product. The box needs to handle significant weight and height, travel well in a vehicle, and open cleanly without disturbing the decoration. It also needs to look the part – a wedding cake box is often photographed alongside the cake itself.

We manufacture wedding cake boxes in rigid construction with reinforced bases and corners, internal insert systems to stabilise the cake during transport, and premium finishing options including ribbon slots, embossed branding, and foil detail. These are fully custom products – dimensions, construction, and finish are all specified to your requirements.

    Cake-Specific Considerations

A few things worth thinking through that are specific to cake packaging and don’t apply to most other bakery products. The custom options available across our cake box range mean most of these considerations can be addressed at the specification stage – before production begins.

Inserts and base boards. A cake without a base board inside the box will move during transport, which damages both the cake and the box. Cake boards sized to the base of the cake, combined with corner inserts for taller products, are the standard way to keep the product stable. We can supply boxes with or without inserts depending on your production setup – if you’re using your own boards, let us know the dimensions and we’ll account for them in the box specification.

Frosting and lid clearance. This comes up more than it should. Buttercream and fresh cream frosting is easily marked by contact with the lid or the sides of the box. The interior dimensions of the box need to give the frosting enough clearance on all sides. If you’re finding marks on your product when boxes arrive, the box dimensions need to be reviewed – it’s a solvable problem.

Refrigerated transport and condensation. Cakes that are transported refrigerated face a condensation problem when they move from cold to ambient temperature. Some materials handle this better than others. If your cakes are regularly going through refrigerated transport or cold storage before delivery, talk to us about material options that are less susceptible to moisture damage.

Retail display vs delivery vs events. A cake box going onto a refrigerated display shelf has different requirements to one being picked up at a counter or delivered to a wedding venue. Display packaging needs to work vertically on a shelf – front-facing print, sturdy structure, a window that showcases the product at eye level. Delivery packaging needs secure closure and robust construction to protect delicate cakes above everything else. Event packaging needs to combine structural integrity with premium presentation. The same box style can be specified differently for each context.

Measuring your cake box correctly. Interior dimensions are what matter, not exterior. Measure the internal length, width, and height – accounting for the base board if you’re using one. Height should be measured to the top of any decoration, not the top of the cake. If you’re unsure, our team can work through the measurements with you before production begins.

Print & Finishing for Cake Boxes

Cake boxes offer more printable surface area than almost any other bakery packaging format – four sides, a lid, and in some cases a base. That’s a significant brand presence, and it’s worth using it well.

For premium and wedding applications, the most effective combinations tend to be a matte laminate base with foil stamp detail on the logo or key graphic elements. Matte reads as considered and high-end; the foil adds a point of visual and tactile distinction without overpowering the design. Embossing or debossing the logo into the lid adds another layer of quality that comes through in photography and in person.

For retail and everyday bakery product, gloss laminate with full colour printing gives colours maximum impact and holds up well to handling. A window cut-out in combination with a gloss finish is a strong retail configuration – the contrast between the printed surface and the transparent panel draws the eye to the product.

For gifting and seasonal product, spot UV allows you to create a contrast between matte and high-gloss surfaces on the same panel – a technique that works particularly well on dark base stocks like black kraft, where the UV coating catches the light without adding any colour.

All boxes are printed using full colour printing in CMYK. Files should be supplied as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or high-resolution print-ready PDF, with fonts outlined and graphics embedded. Free design support is included – we’ll produce a free 3D mockup for your approval before production begins, and handle minor artwork adjustments at no extra charge. Free dieline templates are available if you’re building your artwork from scratch.
