Custom Brownie Boxes
Brownies sit in an interesting position in the bakery category – they’re a casual, everyday product and a premium gifting item at the same time. Whether you’re packaging a decadent chocolate brownie for cafe retail or a curated dessert box for corporate gifting, the packaging needs to work across both contexts. The product itself presents a specific set of challenges: dense and heavy relative to its size, a fudgy surface that sticks to anything it contacts, a flat square or rectangular format that varies considerably in portion size, and toppings that are easily dislodged.
Our custom brownie boxes are manufactured to suit the specific dimensions and properties of your product – from single cafe portions to full slab packaging for wholesale supply – with material and insert specifications that handle the practical demands of brownie packaging. We’ve been supplying brownie packaging to Australian bakeries, dessert businesses, and corporate gifting operations since 2017.

Choosing the Right Brownie Box Configuration
Brownies come in more format variations than most bakery products – individual portions, full slabs, mixed selections, stacked layers – and the right box configuration depends on which format you’re primarily packaging.
Individual portions vs full slab vs mixed selection. A single-portion brownie is typically a square or rectangle of 5 to 8 centimetres per side and 3 to 4 centimetres tall. Full slabs are much larger – a standard tray bake slab can be 30 centimetres or more across – and require a box with a substantially larger footprint and a base strong enough to support the weight without flexing. Mixed selection boxes, where multiple brownie flavours or varieties are presented together, need a configuration that keeps each piece separated to prevent flavour transfer and surface contact.
Stacking and layering. Brownies can be stacked in a multi-layer configuration, which is common in wholesale and large-quantity gifting. The challenge is that fudgy brownie surfaces stick to each other and to any surface they contact under pressure. Interleaving tissue or glassine paper between layers is standard practice, and the box insert needs to account for this additional height. If you’re planning a stacked configuration, the total interior height specification needs to include the interleaving material as well as the product.
Weight is a practical consideration that’s easy to underestimate. A box of twelve dense brownie portions is significantly heavier than twelve cupcakes or twelve macarons. The base of the box needs to hold that load without flexing or delaminating during transport. For high-quantity configurations, a more robust base construction is worth the additional cost – a base that fails during delivery is more expensive than the upgrade.
The square footprint affects box style options. Brownies are naturally square or rectangular, which limits the box styles that work well. Tall or cylindrical formats don’t suit the product. Shallow, flat boxes with a secure lid or tuck closure work best, and window placement on square-footprint boxes is more straightforward than on irregularly shaped products.
Brownie Box Styles We Offer
We manufacture custom brownie boxes across a range of configurations to suit different products, quantities, and sales contexts. All styles are available in custom sizes, materials, and finishes.
Single Brownie Boxes
The format most commonly used for cafe retail, artisan brownie brands, and premium individual gifting. A single brownie box needs to do a lot with a small surface area – present the product well, represent the brand clearly, and hold the brownie securely without the fudgy surface making contact with the lid or walls.
Single brownie boxes are available with window panels to show the texture and any topping detail, with various lid configurations to suit different brownie heights, and with finishing options suited to both everyday retail and premium gifting contexts.
Multi-Brownie Boxes
Four, six, nine, and twelve-portion configurations for retail multipacks, gifting, and wholesale supply. These are the most common format for brownie gifting – a selection of flavours or varieties presented together in a single box is a natural gift format that suits birthdays, corporate gifting, and seasonal occasions.
Internal configuration options include individual compartments, grid inserts, or a single open cavity with interleaving paper depending on the product and the presentation requirement. Compartmented inserts keep each brownie separated and prevent surface contact; an open cavity with interleaving layers suits a more casual presentation or a product where the portions are uniform enough that separation isn’t critical.
Brownie Slab Boxes
A format specific to brownie packaging that doesn’t have an equivalent in most other bakery categories. A full brownie slab – an uncut tray bake portion – is a common product for wholesale supply, catering, and bulk gifting. The box needs a footprint large enough to accommodate the slab, a base construction robust enough to support the weight, and a lid that protects the surface without making contact.
Slab boxes are typically simpler in print treatment than gift configurations – the primary requirements are structural integrity and food-safe material specification rather than premium presentation. That said, a well-branded slab box for a wholesale or corporate supply context still contributes to brand recognition at the point of use.
Window Brownie Boxes
A window on a brownie box shows the texture of the product – the dense, fudgy surface, the crumb structure visible at the edges, and any toppings such as nuts, sea salt flakes, chocolate drizzle, or freeze-dried fruit. For a product where texture is a key part of the appeal, a window does more to communicate the quality of the brownie than print work alone.
Window placement for brownies works best on the lid or the front face of the box, showing the top surface of the brownie where toppings are most visible. A full-face lid window gives the maximum product visibility and works particularly well for gift configurations where the box is opened from the top.
Brownie Gift Boxes
Brownies are one of the most popular products in the corporate and personal gifting category – they’re universally appealing, easy to share, and work across a wide range of occasions. The gift box format needs to match that positioning.
Our brownie gift boxes are available in rigid construction with premium finishing options including foil stamping, embossing, ribbon closures, and custom tissue or shredded paper lining. The combination of a well-finished exterior and a neatly presented interior – whether that’s individually compartmented portions or a layered selection with interleaving paper – creates a gift that reads as considered and high quality before the box is even opened.
Brownie-Specific Considerations
A few properties of brownies that directly affect packaging decisions and are specific to this product.
Fudgy surfaces stick. This is the most common practical problem in brownie packaging. A fudgy brownie surface will adhere to the interior of the lid, the walls of the box, and any adjacent brownie surface under even light pressure. The fix is straightforward – insert compartments that hold each brownie with a small clearance on all sides, tissue or glassine interleaving for stacked configurations, and a lid interior that doesn’t make contact with the product surface. Getting this right also helps maintain freshness and prevents moisture from affecting the surface texture during storage and transit.
Oil and chocolate migration. Brownies have a moderate to high fat content and contain chocolate, both of which migrate into paperboard over time. The rate is slower than with donuts or fried pastries, but for brownies that are pre-packed and held for several hours before sale, a grease resistant material or lining is worth considering. This is particularly relevant for slab packaging where the product surface area in contact with the box is large.
Crumbly vs fudgy varieties have different requirements. A cakey, crumbly brownie is more fragile at the edges than a dense fudgy one. Crumbly varieties benefit more from individual compartments that prevent edge contact, and the lid clearance needs to be sufficient that the lid doesn’t compress the product and cause crumbling when it’s closed. If your range includes both styles, it’s worth considering whether a single box specification can serve both or whether they need separate configurations.
Toppings dislodge easily. Nuts, sea salt flakes, freeze-dried fruit, chocolate chips, and drizzle toppings are popular on artisan brownies and they all have the potential to dislodge during transport. A topping that’s embedded in the surface is more secure than one that’s applied on top of a glaze. For boxes containing heavily topped brownies, the lid clearance needs to account for the height of any surface toppings, and the interior of the lid should not contact the topping surface.
Corporate gifting has specific requirements. Brownies are one of the most requested products for corporate gifting in Australia – end-of-year gifts, client presents, office parties, and team celebrations all commonly feature brownie boxes. Christmas is consistently the highest-demand period, and orders placed without sufficient lead time regularly miss production windows. In this context, the packaging often needs to carry a corporate logo, a personalised message, or customizable branding to reflect the company sending it. The overall presentation needs to meet professional standards – packaging that looks considered and well-made reinforces the value of the gift. Lead time planning is important for corporate gifting, particularly for the November and December peak.
Print & Finishing for Brownie Boxes
Brownies occupy a distinctive visual space – the product is dark, dense, and rich-looking, which creates interesting creative options for how the packaging relates to the product.
Dark base stocks work particularly well with brownies. Black kraft or dark brown kraft as the box material creates a visual coherence with the product that lighter bases don’t. A black box with gold or copper foil stamping is a combination that performs consistently well in the premium brownie gifting market, and it photographs well against the dark brownie surface visible through a window panel.
For lighter base stocks, a contrast approach – white or ivory box with a rich, dark print treatment – creates a different kind of visual impact. This works well for brands that want their packaging to stand out against the product rather than complement it, and it gives more flexibility for full colour printing across the exterior panels.
Window and interior presentation together create the complete visual impression for a brownie gift box. A well-designed exterior with a window that reveals neatly arranged, uniformly sized brownie portions communicates quality and care. If the interior presentation is inconsistent – portions of different sizes, crumbled edges, uneven arrangement – even premium exterior packaging won’t compensate for it.
For corporate gifting, a clean, professional print treatment with the client’s logo and a minimal design is often more appropriate than a heavily decorated finish. The packaging needs to represent the sending company, which means the branding needs to be primary rather than the box manufacturer’s aesthetic.
All boxes are printed using full colour printing in CMYK. Files should be supplied as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or high-resolution print-ready PDF, with fonts outlined and graphics embedded. Free design support is included – we’ll produce a free 3D mockup for your approval before production begins, and handle minor artwork adjustments at no extra charge. Free dieline templates are available if you’re building your artwork from scratch. All finishes are fully customizable to enhance your brand presentation across retail and gifting contexts.
